What is Finnish Character Test?

Finnish character test is a test which was originally made for working dogs. This means a good working dog gets a high score but it does not mean a high-score dog is a good family dog. Highest score is +300 and lowest -300. There are 9 different parts to judging and based on the importance and heritage of the characteristic features the parts have different multipliers.
  • I Functional Capacity: Courage. The dog's ability to function and control its actions even in fearful or difficult situations.
  • II Tendency to aggressive behaviour: The tendency to act aggressively when threatened.
  • III Desire for defence action: Dog's tendency to defend itself or it's owner.
  • IV Desire to fight: How well dog accepts and handles the challenges, the "drive".
  • V Nerves: How well the dog copes with the high pressure and different situations of character test without stressing too much.
  • VI Temperament: Attentivity, ability to adapt and notice the new things in surroundings, liveliness.
  • VII Mental hardness: How the dog remembers (or reacts based on) past experiences. Mentally soft dog remembers bad things and is afraid the bad things happen again in similiar situation/place.
  • VIII Accessibility: Does the dog welcome people near and how well.
  • Reaction to shots: How the dog reacts to shooting.

Conclusion

You can't really draw any conclusions of bu characters because there is so little material. Especially because most of the tested dogs belong to active owners so the dogs have possibly seen more test-like situations (shooting, different floor materials) than a normal home-dog. Dogs have to be over 2 years to participate so past experiences have already shaped the dog.
Also the lack of tested material can result in inaccurate results if even one of the tested dogs had a "bad day". The big age gaps between tested dogs must also be taken into consideration. Older dogs tend to get a higher score than younger dogs.

Least variety is seen in parts V (nerves) and VIII (accessibility). From these you can probably say that an average buhund has average nerves, +1 tendency to nervousness and buhunds also tend to be kind, accessible and open.
